I only have 10-15 minutes to exercise. Is it even worth it?

Absolutely! Even a 10-15-minute brisk walk, a quick bodyweight circuit (like squats, push-ups, and lunges), or dancing to a few of your favorite songs can boost your mood, improve circulation, and contribute to your weekly fitness goals. Consistency is more important than duration.

Or even better and if you can't go outside, Do one of the workouts from The Express Workouts. The main idea behind the "Express Workouts" is to provide effective, concentrated workouts in a very short amount of time, typically around 10 minutes each.

FUN FACT YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW

Your Heart Can Sync with Music

Listening to music while exercising can do more than pump you up—it can literally sync your heartbeat to the rhythm. This is called "entrainment," and it’s why your favorite workout songs feel so energizing!

Build Your Bone Bank: The Best Exercises for Stronger Bones

When we think about exercise, we often focus on what we can see: toned muscles, a smaller waistline, or improved stamina. But one of the most critical benefits of an active lifestyle happens on the inside, deep within our skeletons. As we age, protecting our bone density becomes essential for staying strong, mobile, and independent.

The good news is that you have significant power to protect your bones from becoming weak and brittle—a condition known as osteoporosis. The secret? Putting your bones to work.

The "Stress to Strengthen" Principle

Think of your bones as a living savings account. You make "deposits" into your bone bank through specific types of exercise. When your bones are put under a healthy amount of stress, they respond by remodeling themselves and becoming denser and stronger. The two most effective ways to create this healthy stress are through weight-bearing exercises and strength-training exercises.

1. Weight-Bearing Exercises: Working Against Gravity

This is any activity you do on your feet, where your bones are responsible for supporting your body weight. It's the force of your muscles and gravity pushing against your bones that stimulates them to grow stronger.

There are two types, so you can choose what works best for your body and joints:

  • High-Impact Weight-Bearing Exercises: These are highly effective but require healthy joints.
    • Examples: Brisk jogging or running, dancing, high-impact aerobics, tennis, and hiking.
    • How it works: The impact of your feet hitting the ground sends a powerful bone-strengthening signal throughout your skeleton.
  • Low-Impact Weight-Bearing Exercises: These are a fantastic and safer alternative if you have joint pain, arthritis, or are just starting out.
    • Examples: Brisk walking (outside or on a treadmill), using an elliptical machine, stair climbing, and low-impact aerobics classes.
    • How it works: While gentler on the joints, these activities still require your bones to support your weight, providing a consistent stimulus for bone growth.

Goal: Aim for at least 30 minutes of weight-bearing exercise most days of the week.

2. Strength-Training Exercises: Making Your Muscles Pull Their Weight

Also known as resistance training, this involves making your muscles work harder by pushing or pulling against some form of resistance. When your muscles contract, they pull on the bones they're attached to, which—you guessed it—triggers more bone growth. This is particularly important for strengthening bones in the wrists, hips, and spine, which are common fracture sites.

  • Examples:
    • Lifting free weights: Using dumbbells or barbells for exercises like bicep curls, overhead presses, and squats.
    • Using weight machines: Gym machines provide a controlled and safe way to target specific muscle groups.
    • Bodyweight exercises: No equipment needed! Push-ups (on the floor or against a wall), lunges, and squats are incredibly effective.
    • Using resistance bands: These are portable, inexpensive, and perfect for adding resistance to a wide variety of movements.

Goal: Incorporate strength training into your routine 2-3 times per week, making sure to target all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, chest, shoulders, and arms).

A Note on Balance

While they don't build bone directly, exercises that improve balance—like Tai Chi and yoga—are crucial. By making you more stable on your feet, they dramatically reduce your risk of falling, which is the number one cause of fractures in older adults.

Before You Begin

It's always a smart idea to check in with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have already been diagnosed with low bone density or have other health concerns.

It's never too late to start investing in your bone health. By choosing to walk, dance, or lift, you are making a direct deposit into your "bone bank"—one that will pay dividends in strength and vitality for years to come.

To your strength and health,

  3. Spread a small amount of softened cream cheese on top of each cucumber slice.
  4. Sprinkle a generous amount of everything bagel seasoning over the cream cheese.
